Vantage account reviewFormula & worked example
Cost-equivalent pips = total entered costs ÷ (pip value per lot × lots)
One lot with a $10 pip value, an illustrative 1-pip spread and $3 commission per side costs $16. Dividing $16 by $10 gives 1.60 cost-equivalent pips. On a midpoint basis, the trade needs that move to cover the entered fees. If your trading platform already measures profit from the executed entry price, do not subtract the spread a second time.
Before opening an account
- Distinguish a midpoint-based price move from profit measured using executed entry and exit prices.
- Spread widening, slippage and changing pip values can move the actual break-even level.
- A negative result from swap credits is a modeled net credit, not guaranteed profit.
- This tool estimates fee-equivalent pips, not an exact stop-loss or take-profit price.
Common questions
Does this predict profit?
No. It only converts entered costs into pips. Directional price changes and execution outcomes are unknown, and leveraged trading can lose money.
Why can a trade need more than the spread to break even?
Commission, overnight charges and other applicable fees add to the spread cost. Dividing that total by the position's pip value expresses all the entered costs in the same unit.
